When I chose this book, I did not realize that it was number 8 in a series; however, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a standalone read. Fun read! The fact that I am slightly familiar with some of the area, in which the action took place, made me feel like I was watching the story unfold.I found this tale to be terrifically entertaining and easy to read. It had a hook that grabbed my attention at the very beginning, and it never let go! The storyline is a bit unusual, but it moves smoothly at a steady pace. It is packed with fascinating characters that come alive and add oodles of interest to the story. The lead character, Grand County deputy sheriff Manny Rivera is sharp, patient, mild mannered and is an all around good person. He is the kind of guy that doesn’t jump to conclusions, and he is methodical about what he does. I want to read more about him.The tale begins with Manny on vacation, and on his way from Moab, UT to Abiquiu, NM to ask a question. He is usually a very relaxed guy; however, he is a bit uptight at the moment. If the answer to the question is yes, then his life will be in for a big change. The jingling of his phone; however, and the conversation that follows changes his plans. His trip will have to be put on hold.Manny has been asked to lead an investigation into an apparent murder/suicide of an elderly couple in a remote area in an adjoining county. The investigation initially does look like a murder/suicide, but there are a few details that make Manny a bit dubious of this conclusion. If the reader is paying attention, there are some clues scattered hither and yon as to the identity of a suspect and the reason the couple is dead. Along the way, the reader meets a number of intriguing characters and visits some awesome landscape.There is an occasional flared temper of a few characters; however, the F and the S words did not mar this tale….not even once. Nice!!!
